　　六十年代香港，经营皓月珠宝店的富商朱兆昌（刘江饰）膝下只有三个女儿，长女朱碧云（商天娥饰）、次女朱碧霞（宣萱饰）及三女儿朱碧霖（陈美诗饰）。兆昌一直希望勤奋又聪明的碧霞继承家业，但碧霞不理父亲的期望，反而离家出走。兆昌只好将碧云嫁给自家伙计何祥兴（林保怡饰），让其协助打理家族生意。而兆昌的外甥洪耀生（陶大宇饰）一直对兆昌的家业虎视眈眈，更利用职务之便以权谋私。

　　这部10集的历史剧主要描述百货业先驱者哈里·戈登·塞尔弗里奇（1858-1947）的传奇经历。塞尔弗里奇是美国出生的英国商人，1906年来到英国，开始在伦敦牛津大街建造塞尔弗里奇百货商店。该店于1909年开业，成为百货商店的「始祖」。后来，情妇和赌瘾让塞尔弗里奇失去了巨 额家产，在穷困潦倒中死去。与塞尔弗里奇有染的著名女性包括：伊莎朵拉·邓肯（Isadora Duncan），现代舞的创始者，使舞蹈成为人类肢体与感情的自然表达方式，因披肩卷入跑车轮胎中而意外身亡；安娜·帕芙洛娃（Anna Pavlova），俄罗斯芭蕾舞演员，当代著名的舞蹈家，为传播和普及芭蕾舞艺术做出重大贡献。
