　　故事从1999年开始，讲述生活在上海工人新村里五个普通家庭的温情故事这五个家庭里，有厂花关爱萍丧偶后一天打两份工，独自抚养儿子肖涵；有陈秀娥知青返城后爱岗爱家，跟女儿钱佳玥之间的亲情却有隔阂；有不务正业的张启明艰苦奋斗当了小老板，去日本打工回来的前妻跟他抢儿子；有艰苦奋斗严肃古板的陈彭宇，女儿却追求自由生长引发家庭矛盾。父母们正经历着亲情危机、家庭重组等一系列人生变化，而孩子们也在一天天长大。

　　杰森与妮琪是一对非常想成为父母的情侣，但在怀上孩子上困难重重。为了实现他们想要婴儿的想法，他们选择了领养，并面对领养过程中带来的一系列问题。

　　十四岁那一年，武则天（冯宝宝 饰）被唐太宗（江汉 饰）招进了宫，成为了才人。好日子没过几天，唐太宗就去世了，失去了这一靠山，武则天被迫面临着出家为尼的悲惨命运。唐太宗之后，唐高宗（鲁振顺 饰）继承了皇位，他十分钦慕武则天的容貌和个性，尽管大臣们极力的反对，唐高宗还是将武则天从尼姑庵中救了出来，留在了身边，封为昭仪。
　　就这样，武则天开始了在权利塔上的攀登之旅，其中最为难缠的敌手，要属善妒多疑的王皇后（斑斑 饰）。最终，武则天还是凭借着诡计和手段扳倒了王皇后，控制了唐高宗，掌控了朝中大权。唐高宗死后，武则天自封为王，开始了她长达六十三年的统治。

　　裁判法院法官高希敏（宣萱饰）升职，被调迁至北区裁判处。葛国光（陈锦鸿饰）一心照顾家庭，两人的交集越来越少。国光两个妹妹葛宝怡（唐诗咏饰）和葛宝贝（陈思齐饰）忙于事业学业早出晚归，母亲钟锭英（吕珊饰）生活上毫无寄托，国光就把母亲接到家中帮忙打理家务和照顾孩子。可母亲和妻子在生活细节上却相处不来，反而令希敏非常困扰。然而矛盾不止于此，两夫妻间的鸿沟日益渐深。而上天又跟希敏开了场玩笑，她并非高天（骆应钧饰）的亲生女儿。
　　由香港电视广播有限公司推出的25集都市情感电视剧《老婆大人2》，是2005年版《老婆大人》的续集，此剧为2009无线节目精选第一季剧集之一。《老婆大人2》继续由宣萱和陈锦鸿主演，于2009年播出。
