故事发生在1994年的美国德克萨斯州，一位名叫尼古拉斯的13岁男孩在放学回家的路上无故失踪了，没有留下任何的线索，期间家人搜寻无果，渐渐放弃了希望，媒体也只将这起事件视为一场普通的失踪案，它并没有引起官方任何的重视。 一晃眼三年半过去，就在除了家人外的所有人都渐渐淡忘了尼古拉斯之际，一群游客在在西班牙南部的一个小镇里发现了一个男孩，这个男孩身体状况非常的糟糕，思维亦十分混乱，但他非常坚定的告诉大家，他就是三年半前失踪的男孩尼古拉斯。尼古拉斯失踪之后，他的母亲的健康就一落千丈，姐姐卡莉成为了失而复得的尼古拉斯的收留者，可是，这虽然是一件值得高兴的事情，但所有的人都觉得其中隐藏着什么不对劲的地方。
