《晚餐》讲述的是一个平凡的家庭遭遇接连的不幸，而曾经一起开心晚餐的幸福也不复存在。金导演表示：“我明年就要50岁了，觉得平凡才是最幸福的事情。但是正如片中的主角们经历了离婚、失业、白发人送黑发人、偶然杀人等不幸一样，常常会有一些意外的不幸让一个平静的家庭四分五裂。刚开始我的剧本中并没有晚餐这场戏，但是拍着拍着觉得一家人一起吃晚餐的场景非常必要，因为那是最幸福的一个瞬间，所以才临时加了一场戏，并且作为了影片的片名。”

两个兄弟和他们的家庭之间的紧张局势升级时，一个视频曝出了其中一个的儿子与另一个的女儿殴打一个无家可归的女人置其死亡。
